the details
1. What are press-on nails?
Press-on nails are ready-made artificial nails designed to fit over your natural nails, giving you a salon-manicure without needing to book an appointment.
At The Nail Siren, press-on nails let you explore different shapes, lengths, colours and designs whenever you want to switch up your look.
Why choose press-on nails?
-
Easy to apply: Just prep, press and go.
-
Endless styles: Switch between everyday minimalism and full fairy whimsy with no fuss.
-
No salon appointment needed: Enjoy a fresh set from the comfort of your own home.
-
Reusable: Sets can be worn more than once, depending on how they're applied, removed and cared for.
Press-on nails can be attached using nail glue - which lasts longer, but will need fully removing from the back of the nail in order to reuse them and adhesive tabs - which last a few days, but require less work to remove. You get to choose the best option for your lifestyle!
2. How to measure your nails
Finding the right size is one of the most important steps. A good fit helps your nails look natural, feel comfortable and stay securely in place.
-
A soft measuring tape in millimetres, or a piece of paper and a ruler
-
A pen
-
Your natural nails, clean and free from polish
Method 1: Using a measuring tape
-
Measure the widest part of each natural nail, from one sidewall to the other.
-
Keep the tape following the natural curve of your nail rather than measuring straight across the top.
-
Record each measurement in millimetres.
-
Measure all ten nails individually, as your fingers may not be the same size on both hands.
-
Compare your measurements with The Nail Siren's sizing chart before ordering.
Important sizing tips
-
Measure your natural nails rather than guessing based on finger size.
-
Don't measure only one hand; corresponding fingers can differ in size.
-
If you're between sizes use the bigger size. A slightly wider nail can sometimes be gently filed at the sides, but a nail that's too narrow should not be forced to fit.
3. How to apply your press-on nails
Step 1: Prep
-
Wash your hands and dry them thoroughly.
-
Gently push back your cuticles.
-
Lightly file the natural nail surface.
-
Remove any remaining oils and polish using acetone, rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. Avoid applying products to broken, irritated or infected skin or nails.
Step 2: Choose your sizes
Lay out your press-on nails and match each one to the correct finger.
Check that every nail sits comfortably from sidewall to sidewall without pressing into the surrounding skin. Arrange the nails in order before you begin applying them.
Step 3: Apply your adhesive
If using nail glue: Apply a small amount of glue on the back of the Press On, in the centre. The glue will spread when you press it on, so this stops leakage near the cuticle. Avoid getting glue on your skin or cuticles, and never force a nail into place if it doesn't fit.
If using adhesive tabs: Choose a tab that fits your natural nail without overlapping the skin. Press it down firmly and smooth out any air bubbles before applying the artificial nail.
Never use household glue or substitute products that aren't designed for nail application.
Step 4: Apply the press-on
Position the press-on close to the cuticle line without placing it on your skin. At a 45 degree angle lower it onto your nail and press firmly according to the adhesive instructions.
Hold it in place for the recommended time, keeping the nail aligned and avoiding movement while the adhesive sets.
Repeat for each finger.
Step 5: Finish your manicure
Check that all the nails feel secure and comfortable. Follow the adhesive instructions before exposing your hands to water or carrying out activities that could loosen the nails.
And that's it — your new manicure is ready!
4. How do I remove press-on nails?
Never pull, rip or force a press-on nail off your natural nail. This can damage the nail underneath.
-
For adhesive tabs and Nail glue: Warm water and a little oil soak will help loosen some adhesive.
-
Nail glue: You can use an acetone soak if you don't plan to reuse the Press Ons.
If you experience irritation, swelling or a suspected allergic reaction, stop using the product and seek appropriate advice.
5. Can I reuse my press-on nails?
Press-on sets can be reused, provided the nails remain intact and are removed carefully. Reusability depends on the nail the adhesive used and how the set is maintained.
To help protect your set:
-
Remove nails gently rather than pulling them off.
-
Clean away adhesive residue only using a method suitable for the nail material.
-
Store your set in its original box or another clean, dry container.
-
Don't reuse damaged or contaminated nails.
6. How long do press-on nails last?
Wear time varies depending on the adhesive, nail preparation, your daily activities and how well the nails fit.
Adhesive tabs are often chosen for temporary wear, while nail glue provides a longer-lasting attachment when used correctly. Neither guarantees a particular wear time, but generally tabs last a few days and glue 1-2 weeks.
For the best results, follow the instructions for your chosen adhesive and avoid using your nails as tools.
7. Your press-on nail questions, answered
Will press-on nails damage my natural nails?
They don't have to, but damage can occur if nails are applied incorrectly, worn when the natural nail is unhealthy or forcibly removed. Correct sizing, suitable adhesive and gentle removal are important.
Can I get my nails wet?
Follow your adhesive's instructions, especially during the initial setting period. Frequent or prolonged water exposure can loosen some adhesives.
Can I file my press-on nails?
Some press-on nails can be gently filed to adjust their length or shape. Use a suitable nail file and avoid excessive filing, which may damage the design or structure.
What if a nail doesn't fit?
Don't force it. Recheck your measurements and sizing chart. If a nail is slightly too wide, it may be possible to file the sides carefully, depending on the design. A nail that's too narrow should be replaced with a better-fitting size.
Are press-on nails suitable for everyone?
Avoid applying them to damaged, irritated or infected nails or surrounding skin. If you have a known sensitivity to nail adhesives, check the ingredients and seek professional advice before use.
